Lega Nord (The Northern League) is an italian right wing party. It was founded in 1991 as a federation of several regional parties of Northern and Central Italy. Its logo is the standing figure of Alberto da Giussano, a legendary knight who fought against Frederick Barbarossa, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, to defend the Lombard League. It was 1167, but nowadays the militants of the party meet every year in Pontida, the place where the originary League was baptized, to continue the fight. It’s not anymore a physical fight, but a political one, to defend the Northern culture and economy from the invasion of immigrants and the laxity of the Southern regions. The slogans of this meeting are “Rome Big Thief” and “Free Padania” (Padania is the name of the country which the Northern League members believe to belong to).

The bizarre mix of celtic symbols (Celts were the ancient inhabitants of Northern Italy), medieval heroes and a natural predisposition to kitsch make the meeting look like a funny but disquieting masquerade, or an unconscious attempt to hide a profound loss of culture and roots.
